Addie Virginia Mahshie, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 after an extended illness. Addie was born in Syracuse on July 12, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Pauline (Philburn) and Percy Jones, and was also predeceased by her brother John F. Jones.
Addie and her husband, James Mahshie, enjoyed decades of marriage together in the Syracuse area. Their greatest pleasure was being around their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they worked very hard to educate their family. She along with Jim were very proud of their accomplishments. Her children, Dr. James Mahshie of Washington, DC, Cindy (David) Esber of Akron Ohio and Deacon Robert (Maggie) Mahshie of Jamesville enjoyed her quick wit and warmth which was also shared by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to tease and be teased by her grandchildren, Aliah, Samira and Kailah Mahshie, Shahna, Allahna, David and Zachary Esber and Zachary (Leslie) and Jamie Mahshie; and her great-grandchildren, Ryan and Eleanor Mahshie.
Addie started her career at the Syracuse Men’s Shop at the Hotel Syracuse before working with her husband in their family run grocery stores. Long before computers, she handled the books for the store and kept track of each customer and their account. She and Jim had hearts so big that they kept a separate list of those who needed a little time to pay for their groceries. She later worked for and retired from the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Syracuse where she was an accountant. She will be remembered for her commitment to her family and supporting their pursuit of quality education.
A soft and beautiful flower with the strength to help her family survive the wars, depression, and everything else life would send her way. Her love for her family and faith in God gave her the inner power to maintain a positive attitude no matter how dark the clouds might appear. However, her quick wit was always ready when anyone stepped out of line.
