Mary Gene Swan, 82, peacefully passed away in her family home in Jamesville on Thursday, June 29, 2017. Swan and her wonderful sister Mona (McDermott) Betterton.

Mary Gene’s highest priority was the relationships that she developed with her relatives and with the friends that she had made over the years. She worked diligently to stay in touch with all of the important people in her life; her family, her friends and their families. She remembered fondly all of the trips that she made with Tom to visit their loved ones.

After her high school graduation, she attended Le Moyne College, where she met Tom and many other life-long friends. Mary Gene went on to get her Master’s Degree in Teaching from SUNY Cortland and returned to Jamesville where she taught Elementary School for over 40 years. She was an exceptional teacher, an advocate for the underdog and she was honored to be associated with the wonderful students, faculty and staff of Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District. Tom and Mary Gene raised their family in Jamesville, NY and Mary Gene was a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church her entire life, until its period of closure. At the time of her death, she was an enthusiastic communicant of St. Ann's Catholic Church, in Manlius, NY.
In recent months, Mary Gene was fortunate to experience the love and support of a remarkable group of new friends that she affectionately named “Team GiGi.” Her family will always remember with appreciation the heroic kindness and deep compassion of Gwenda Warner, Barb Nesci, Stacy Field, Tara Korkue, Linda Swan, Lydia Guy, Amie Kennedy, Maureen Whitney, Cristine Hendricks, Jeanette D’Agostino and Brooke Burke. These ladies are truly remarkable people and they have provided Mary Gene with kindness, friendship, dignity and independence as she battled the limitations of her illnesses.
Mary Gene was one-of-a-kind. She was an amazing educator, a loving mother and a good friend. She was funny and she was outspoken. She was thoughtful, resourceful and generous. She was loved.
