Jean B. Hayes, nee Briggs, of Fayetteville, NY, died on July 4, 2017, shortly after celebrating her 90th birthday. She passed peacefully, surrounded by family. She was born in Gouverneur, NY, to Lloyd and Mae Briggs, and grew up in Oswego, NY. Jean graduated from Oswego High School in 1945 and from Syracuse University in 1949. She received her Master’s in Education from SU in 1953.
Mrs. Hayes began her teaching career in Menands, then moved to Fayetteville-Manlius. She loved her many years teaching Social Studies, and gifted and talented youth at F-M. She also taught economics at Cazenovia College.
Since 1955, Jean was an active member of Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church. She served in many capacities over the years, as an Elder, a Deacon, a member of the Women’s Circle, and the Chair of Christian Education. Jean was a current and enthusiastic participant in Home Garden Club for over 50 years. She loved gardening and arranging flowers, and often exhibited at the New York State Fair. She was an accredited Master Judge with the National Garden Clubs, Inc.
Jean was predeceased by her son, Richmond S. Hayes, III; and her brothers, Alexander Briggs and MacLean Briggs. Her beloved husband of almost 64 years, Richmond S. Hayes, Jr., passed away in March of 2017. Surviving are three daughters, Lauren (David) Haswell, Lisa Hayes (Kurt Schmidt), and Lynn Hayes (Robert Ford); eight grandchildren, Kate, David, Meg, Josh, John, Carl, Evan, and Elizabeth; three great grandchildren, Richie, Zuri, and Jovi; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Jean cherished all of her family and was especially devoted to her husband, Richmond. She loved her church family, her kind Fayetteville neighbors, her many special students, and her wonderful friends at Garden Club. She was a remarkable woman of many talents and achievements who will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 29th at 10 AM at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church, 5299 Jamesville Road, DeWitt. Calling hours will be Friday, July 28th from 6-8 pm at the Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Blvd East, DeWitt. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Riverside Cemetery, Oswego.
