Ruth P Houghtalen, 82, of DeWitt, NY died peacefully Friday, October 20, 2017 at home. A native of Binghamton, NY, she lived in Syracuse since 1961. She struggled with cancer for the past 3 years, and although she will be greatly missed, she is resting with her beloved sisters and other family members who passed before her.
Ruth was a graduate of the Wilson Memorial Hospital Binghamton nursing program and later obtained her BS in nursing from Syracuse University. As a hospital nurse and then an Onondaga County Community Health Nurse retiring in 1991, her calm ways and kind words helped all who were blessed to know her. She was a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church since it was formed. She was an avid gardener and a member of the Onondaga Garden Club and the Garden Club of Stuart, Florida. She loved her orchids which were transported to and from Florida every year. Traveling the globe was her other passion which she instilled in her husband, Don.
She is predeceased by her first husband, Gilbert; and two sisters, Sandra and Alice. Surviving are her husband, Donald Van Harken; son, William (Kristine) Houghtalen; daughter, Gail (James) Houghtalen Lambie; brother, James (Carol) Partridge; brother-in-law, William Beaudin; stepsons, Donald (Sandra) Van Harken, Jr., John (Magdalena) Van Harken, Joseph (Carli) Van Harken; Michael (Therese) Mahoney; sixteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday October, 28 at St. David’s Church, Jamar Drive, Fayetteville, NY. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Syracuse. Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Friday October 27 at the Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Blvd East, DeWitt.
