Brian L. Fisher posted a condolence
Wednesday, May 31, 2017My condolences go out to the Effler family on your loss. Many years ago I was fortunate to take Steve's course on Onondaga Lake at SUNY ESF. It was a great course, and he was a fantastic limnologist and scientist. We both shared a connection to Bob Hennigan, as I was a TA for Prof. Hennigan at SUNY ESF a very long time ago. I know Steve was also greatly influenced by Bob in his graduate studies. He will be missed, but please take comfort in the fact that without Steve ..... Onondaga Lake may never have been fully remediated. His work at the Upstate Freshwater Institute was outstanding. Rest in peace, Steve .... your legacy will live on. Best, Brian L. Fisher

Tuesday, April 18, 2017Kathy, the Effler family, and UFI staff and friends, I’m so sorry to hear this news and my prayers go out to you all. Steve was a friend and colleague that I’ll never forget. While stubborn, at least to me, his devotion to his family, UFI, and the research he so loved will leave a forever lasting impact on many of us. Steve’s resolve and strong spirit during this trial has been inspirational. I’m only sorry he and I did not get to share a beer and a Grey Goose vodka together as we planned. It will need to wait until we see each other again. Again my condolences to you all.

We'll bend an elbow in his honor with a special beer, Love, Patty

Monday, April 17, 2017The New York State Federation of Lake Associations, Inc. Board of Directors and I extend our deepest sympathy to the Effler family as well as our gratitude for having had the opportunity to collaborate with Steve over the last 15 years. Although Steve will always be known for his work on Onondaga Lake, NYSFOLA is most thankful for his unwavering support of the Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program. This year, over 150 "other" lakes across the state will be sampled because of his long standing commitment to dedicate UFI staff and laboratory services to the program. He will be very deeply missed.

Monday, April 17, 2017I am sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I am a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Ithaca and have had several occasions over the past 20 years or so to interact with Steve in regards to studies of Onondaga Lake and its tributaries. Most recently I participated on a Technical Advisory Group created by NY-DEC to oversee UFI's development of a model for Cayuga Lake. I was always impressed with Steve's mastery of his subject and the clear, balanced, and thorough presentation of his studies that left the listener with no doubt that his conclusions were correct. His loss to the scientific communities of Onondaga County and New York State will be felt for many years. My condolences to his family and friends. -- Bill Coon

Monday, April 17, 2017Dear Kathy, I'm so saddened by the news... A small comfort was to know that Steve had accomplished so much after the diagnosis (not to mention many, many triumphs before that), including the recent paper (of which I'm an honored coauthor) published in Limnology and Oceanography. He had left indelible marks on this earth and improved so many people's lives. It was also comforting to know that you made the best of this trying ordeal with good spirit and that he left without pain. We're so sorry for your loss... We'll forever cherish the memories of Steve. Take care, Feng and family

Sunday, April 16, 2017Steve was a welcome candid voice when it came to Onondaga Lake. The Lake wouldn't be where it is today without his efforts. Our condolences to all the family including my wife's former students.

Sunday, April 16, 2017Dear Kathy, I saw in today's paper that Steven had passed. I hadn't seen him or you at "Fitness Forum" in a very long time, so I knew things weren't going well. Also, I had been thinking of you this past week because one of our swimming buddies, Gerry Bastable, had recently died. Steven did a real service to our community in helping to clean up a lake that was in worse condition than many of the bodies of water in the former Soviet Union. The paper ran a nice tribute story to him today. My sincerest condolences to your and your family, Barb Blaszak

Sunday, April 16, 2017To Kathy and family, My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. Steve was a wonderful man and the best neighbor I could ask for. He so enjoyed life and always had a smile on his face. I will miss hearing the faint sounds of jazz that he would play on Sunday mornings while he read the newspaper on the deck. I will always remember how welcoming he was when I first arrived on Hillsboro Pkwy, and was moving into my house. We were all so fortunate to have him in our lives. Joe
