Margaret (Gilkey) Richards, 95, of Jamesville, NY, a native of Springfield, MA, passed away peacefully at Crouse Hospital on 23 January with her family at her side. She was the daughter of James Gordon Gilkey and Calma Howe Gilkey and was a longtime resident of Westerly, RI where she and her husband Clark L. Richards, Jr. lived from 1976 through 2001 when she moved to the Syracuse Area. She was a graduate of Wellesley College and Washington University. While in Rhode Island she worked as a curriculum writer and teacher–trainer for the Connecticut Consortium for Law and Citizenship Education and was a president of the Literacy Volunteers of Washington County, RI. In Syracuse Margaret continued to teach English as a second language and was an instructor to foreign students at the SU English Language Institute. Margaret loved reading, history, knitting, gardening and hiking. She especially enjoyed hiking in the mountains of New Hampshire with her family.
She is predeceased by her husband Clark L. Richards, Jr. and is survived by her three daughters Edith (Scott) McNutt, Carolyn (John Thomas) Richards and Leslie (Raymond) Porzio. She also has three grandchildren, Philip Nightingale, Matthew (Kimberly) Porzio and Allison (Timothy) Kenien, and three much loved great granddaughters, Amanda and Olivia Nightingale and Kierra Porzio. A memorial service will be held,11 AM Saturday May 17th at the First Unitarian Universalist Society.
