Emilia Cecilia Mortas, formerly of Solvay, New York and DeWitt, New York, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the age of 83. She was born July 4, 1936 in Solvay. Her family and friends called her “Millie”. She had attended the Solvay Schools and Frazer School and was a longtime communicant of St. Cecilia Church in Solvay and Holy Cross Church in DeWitt.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ludwik and Frances Mortas; her sisters, Irene Mortas, Dorothy (Mortas) Moore, Helen (Mortas) Tobin, Frances (Mortas) Traver, and Genevieve “Gennie” Mortas.
Emilia was a Special Needs person. She genuinely liked people. She treasured all the notes and cards she received from all the family and extended family members and the friends she had made over the years; and she enjoyed sending out notes and cards in acknowledgement. She never forgot any friend or family member’s birthday.
She enjoyed sewing projects, which she often sent out as gifts, painting, coloring pictures, music, especially polkas, dancing, bowling, yard work, talking to people, traveling, and all kinds of parties and celebrations, which were a constant in her large family over the years. When she entered Loretto, her sister Frances visited her daily to keep her abreast of family news. After Frances passed in 2018, her brother “Louis” became her caretaker
She is survived by her brother, Ludwik “Louis” (Harriet Kot) Mortas, Syracuse, NY; her sisters, Evelyn, Camillus, NY, Patricia Piperno, Union Springs, NY, Mary (David) Chase, Dallas TX, Margaret Cook, Watertown, NY, and Suzanne Brown, Severna Park, MD; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Mass will be held at 12 pm on Friday, August 30 at Holy Cross Church, 4112 E. Genesee Street, DeWitt. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt. Calling hours will be Thursday, August 29, from 5-7 pm at Fairchild & Meech Dewitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Boulevard East, DeWitt.
