We celebrate the life of David Martini today. David (Arthur) Martini (69), passed away on Wednesday April 8, 2020 after a long illness and nursing care due to complications with MS at the Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville, NY. David was a life-long resident of Jamesville, NY where he grew up, worked and will finally be laid to rest. A graduate of Jamesville-DeWitt High School, he followed it with certified machinist training. He spent most of his career at Alpha Cement Plant in Jamesville and then many years at the Syracuse University Physical plant where he was active in CSEA union affairs and was a union steward. An avid outdoorsman, David enjoyed extensive hunting and fishing while he was able to do so. Although he never had children of his own, he was “Poppa Dave” to many neighbors and close friends’ children and “Uncle Dave” to his loving nieces. David was born April 2, 1951 (one day after April Fool’s Day which he often pranked the family with) to Dominick “Toots” Martini and Pauline Ciarpelli both of Jamesville. He was predeceased by his wife, Arlene (Ryan) Martini; and is survived by his brother, Gary (Sue) Martini of Albany, NY; nieces, Marissa Martini of Delmar, NY and Alexandra (Lexxi) Martini of Hoboken, NJ; and many cousins of the Ciarpelli, Kowalski, Ferrante, Gorman and Martini families from around the area. David always had a smile or impish grin on his face and always left others with a feeling of grace and happiness. When friends and family would visit, he would always ask; How are you doing? When are you going to retire? How’s the Band?. Never bitter or sad, he was a light to all that met him and loved him. A special thank you to Tom and Judy Kowalski whose weekly visits, reading of books and showing of movies sustained David through the many years he was at Iroquois. The family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the staff, health care professionals and friends David made while a long-term resident at the Iroquois Nursing facility, you cared for him so well for so long, you all became part of our extended family. The family also remembering those many residents of the Jamesville community that visited often and shared their time with him. A small family only interment will occur next Thursday at St. Mary’s Cemetery in DeWitt. We will schedule a celebration later this spring or early summer when the crisis has passed and we are able to travel again.
