Vera Louise Hopkins Ruterman, 90, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Born in South Gate, CA to Vera Parker Hopkins and David William Hopkins on September 24, 1930, she lived in small towns along the Arizona-Mexico border and attended one-room schoolhouses until her family moved to Douglas, Arizona in 1941. It was there, in 1947, that she met Ernest Richard Ruterman, the love of her life. She graduated from the University of Arizona in 1952, married Ernie, taught first grade and began a series of cross-country moves that ended in Syracuse, NY, in 1958. She is survived by her sister, Marilyn Hopkins Murray; brother, James David Hopkins; sister-in-law, Marilyn Ruterman Rodman (Bill); children, Steven Lee (Joy Sayers Hill), Gail Lynn (Thomas C. Schwartz), Keith Ernest, and Paul Brian; grandchildren, Cary Ruterman Sherman (Jonathan Sherman), Lillian Emily Vera Rush (Benjamin Rush), Louisa Catharine Ann Schwartz, and Evan Hill Ruterman; great grandchildren, Genevieve Ellen Rush and Julia Louise Rush; and cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Audrey Hopkins Pilcher. In death, she is reunited with Ernest Richard Ruterman, her beloved husband of 68 years. A lifelong reader, her many good works included volunteering at schools and libraries, managing fiction at Le Moyne College bookstore, leading Girl Scout Troops, and teaching English as a second language. She loved birdwatching and gardening. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 11 am at Holy Cross Church, DeWitt. Entombment took place at St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum. A calling hour will precede the Mass from 10-11 am at the church.
