Jane Coons, 91, died Sunday November 21, 2021 at Highland Hospital, Rochester. Born in Syracuse, a daughter of H. Edwin Coons and Elsie Green Coons, she was a graduate of Central HS -1948; Syracuse University (BA 1952; Eta Pi Upsilon, Delta Gamma); and Washington University (MA). Jane lived most of her adult life in Rochester and taught fifth grade math in the West Irondequoit School District until her retirement. She was a Deacon and Elder of the Rochester Downtown United Presbyterian Church, and a faithful worker for the Rochester chapter of Delta Gamma, where she was in charge of its pecan sale, an annual fund-raiser. She began her teaching career when the New Math was inaugurated over the whole country, driving many parents to despair. She survived this baptism by fire to flourish as a teacher. Jane was meticulously careful with handling money for the organizations she worked with, and to the end of her life she had beautiful handwriting. She kept the records for the Saxton reunion, a family group on her mother's side, and was called on to run their annual meetings in Otsego County as well. She loved flowers, gardening for as long as she could do it, and looking at others' gardens when she was no longer able to maintain her own. She particularly looked forward every spring to the Lilac Festival in Rochester. She also enjoyed driving to parks and places of natural beauty, always taking friends or relatives with her on these local trips. Her sister Esther fondly remembers journeys taken with Jane to Florida, the Adirondacks, and California, and another farther afield, hiking in the mountains of Switzerland and winding up in France. She is lovingly remembered by her family and fondly by her many friends; she gave of herself tirelessly to help many individuals and organizations. Above all, she was always an optimist. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Marcia C. and Irving G. Hill; her brother-in-law, David Laventhol; niece, Sarah Laventhol; and companion, Ray Towns. She is survived by her sister, Esther Coons Laventhol; five nieces and nephews, Peter (Diana) Laventhol, New York, NY, Robert Allan (Janette) Hill, Boston MA, Catherine Elizabeth (Robert) Hill Suttmeier, Oneida, NY, Cynthia Anne (Todd) Hill-Goddard, Rush, NY, and John Irving (Denise) Hill, Waynesboro, VA; nine grand-nieces and nephews, Emily (Stephen) Cady, Benjamin(Anne) Hill, Christopher (Yukiyo) Hill, Jane and Mary Suttmeier, Nicholas and Christian Goddard, Emma and Sydney Hill; great-grandnieces and nephews, Ellie, Charlie and Hannah Cady; Sally, Jane and Caroline Hill; and Kyrie and Keanu Hill; her Rochester friends and her Otsego County cousins; all of whom she loved very much. The family wishes to thank the staff of the 5th floor of Highland Hospital, U/R Out Patient care and Jewish Senior Living of Rochester (Wolk Manor) for their care with a special thanks to Jeff her long time USPS carrier on Lilac Drive, who always looked out for her. Family and Friends are invited to a Memorial Service 11:00 A.M. December 18, 2021 at the Downtown United Presbyterian Church, 121 N. Fitzhugh Street, Rochester NY. Private interment took place at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, NY. For those who wish to give a memorial gift we suggest the Downtown United Presbyterian Church or the Salvation Army.
