Obituary of Helen E. Stern

Helen E. Stern of North Syracuse died November 10, 2013, at Crouse Hospital. She was raised and educated in the Watertown and Potsdam, New York, area. Mrs. Stern lived in Syracuse since 1951. Music became her favorite hobby at a very early age and voice and piano lessons were started at the age of twelve. Mrs. Stern sang in church choirs as a soloist, in school musicals, at recitals, for radio, and entertained many organizations. Her youthful dreams and aspirations were in the direction of opera and concert work. Lily Pons was one of her favorite opera singers. Mrs. Stern studied music at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, New York. She was considered to be a rising coloratura opera star. Mrs. Stern was very active in the Syracuse community and participated in the Genetaska (Kiwanis) Club of Syracuse and in the Federation of Women's Clubs. She held the position of President in both clubs and through her work helped to promote programs, Syracuse Girls Club, Elmcrest Children's Home, and Camp Fire Girls, to assist children and also helped promote cancer research for the welfare of women. Mrs. Stern was a long time member of the Corinthian Club where she enjoyed playing bridge and socializing with her many friends. Mrs. Stern loved children and animals. She supported her daughter's interest in scouting by becoming both a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop leader. Animal rights was another avid interest of Mrs. Stern and she actively supported the Humane Association and the Central New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CNYSPCA). Mrs. Stern was a member of May Memorial Unitarian Society for over forty years. She enjoyed fellowship with her many friends at May Memorial and was a soloist in the church choir. Mrs. Stern also enjoyed sailing with family and friends on Skaneateles Lake where she and her husband had been a member of the Midlakes Sailing Club. Mrs. Stern is survived by her daughter, Pamela M. Stern of Manlius, New York, and nephews and nieces. Her husband, Erwin M. Stern, died in 2008. Mrs. Stern and her husband were college sweethearts and their union of sixty seventy years was filled with love, respect, and devotion. A memorial service will be held at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, 3500 East Genesee Street, Syracuse, New York. The service will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 2:00 PM.
