Obituary of Margaret S. Lewis
Margaret Schaefer Lewis, 94, of Onondaga Hill died peacefully at home March 7th after a brief illness, surrounded by family. A native of Syracuse, Margaret (Mike) attended Tusculum College in Tennessee for two years and graduated from Syracuse University. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She taught elementary school in the West Genesee School District for 22 years before retiring in 1984. A dedicated Christian, she served as a deacon and elder at Elmwood Elementary Presbyterian Church. For the past 15 years she was a member of Onondaga Hill Presbyterian Church and a member of its’ Circle One. Mike volunteered at Community General Hospital for 33 years and in 1959 founded the City View Garden Club of Onondaga Hill.
In Onondaga Hill Mike bowled with the Mixed League, golfed with Golden Girls, was a member of the Antique Club, Historical Society, and the Red Hats. Upon retiring she enjoyed traveling, gardening and being with family.
Margaret is predeceased by her sister Christine Schaefer, her son John Schoonmaker, Jr., parents Ernst and Ethel Schaefer, husband Grant W. Lewis and step-daughter Carol Lewis Root. Surviving are sons Peter (Noreen) and Terry Schoonmaker of Syracuse, daughter Martha (John) Hamel of Cortland, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and six step-grand children.
A Celebration of Life will be at 11 AM Saturday, March 22 at the Onondaga Hill Presbyterian Church, 4797 Makyes Road. Friends may call immediately following the service.
