Obituary of Rev. Canon Tim Stewart Hall
The Reverend Canon Tim Stewart Hall Tim S. Hall, an Episcopal priest, died quietly on March 22, 2014, after an extended illness. He was 76 years old, and maintained residences in Indian Lake and DeWitt, New York. Canon Hall retired in 2002 from the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, where he led the Congregational Development team. He served several Episcopal congregations in Central New York, including most recently St. John’s Church, Oneida (2013). He was Rector of Calvary Church, Utica (1976-1988) and Lead Rector of the Syracuse Urban Cluster (1988-1994). Tim Hall was known as an activist priest in the urban neighborhoods in which he served, working with Corn Hill People United in Utica and on the South Side of Syracuse, with the Rev. Larry Ellis of God’s Way. In Utica, he also served on the board of the House of the Good Shepherd. A 1968 graduate of Nashotah House seminary, in Wisconsin, Canon Hall served as Rector of the Church of the Holy Nativity, and as Curate at Mt. Calvary Episcopal Church, both in Baltimore, MD. He graduated from Hanover College, Hanover, IN, in 1959, and then worked as a probation officer in Indianapolis, and was active at All Saints Episcopal Church and in the Society for a Catholic Commonwealth before entering seminary. He was born in Indianapolis in 1937, and is survived by a sister, Susan Hall Heitzman (Stephen), of Vernon, IN, and a brother, Mark Hall (Autumn) of Maryville, TN, as well as Josephine Brauer, his great-aunt, and a niece and nephew and their four children. His first wife, Linda Carr Hall, died in 1982. Their daughter, Leah Hall, of Asheville, NC, survives them, along with her daughters Marin and Jenesea. Canon Hall is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Schmitt, and their four children, Stewart Hall, Seth Schmitt-Hall (Sara Schmuckler Hall), Laura Schmitt-Hall and Simon Schmitt-Hall. Jacqueline Schmitt, also an Episcopal priest, is Rector of St. David’s Church, DeWitt, and Simon is a sophomore at Jamesville-DeWitt High School. A Requiem Mass will be held on Saturday, April 5, at 5:00 pm at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 341 Main St, Oneida. Friends may greet the family at the Church from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, before the service.
