Obituary of Mary Ellen Ryan
Mary Ellen Tracy Ryan was born May 10, 1922 in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of Frank Sedgwick Tracy and Harriet Wilkinson Bowen. Mary Ellen’s roots run deep in the history of the Salt City, with her ancestors counting among its founding fathers. She spent an idyllic childhood growing up in the Sedgwick Farms neighborhood and summers in the village of Siasconset on Nantucket Island, times she remembered with great fondness. A proud graduate of Nottingham High School, she then spent the pre-war years working in advertising in New York City. She returned to Syracuse where she married James Kenneth Ryan and raised her family. She was a realtor for almost forty years most recently with Prudential. She was a former member of the Junior League, the Cazenovia Ski Club and the Cazenovia Golf Club. She was a member of the Fayetteville Garden Club and the Coterie of Fayetteville and she was a volunteer at the Fayetteville Library and Meals on Wheels.
She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Terry Ryan LeVeque in 1995 and her beloved son James Kenneth Ryan, Jr “Jimbo” in 2003. She is survived by her son, Michael Sedgwick Ryan (Diane) of Darien, CT; her four grandchildren, Tracy Ryan Davies (Jay), Dana Ryan Kelly (Brian) Michael Sedgwick Ryan, Jr and Claire LeVeque Wimberley (Mike) and her four great-grandchildren, John Hywel Davies, Abigail Wilkinson Davies, James Patrick Kelly, and Isla Louise Wimberley.
Mary Ellen meant so much to so many people and leaves behind an incredible legacy. She was Mom, Granny, Great-Granny, a dear friend, a career woman, a passionate gardener, avid reader and strong swimmer in the Nantucket surf. Mary Ellen was surrounded by loved ones until the very end.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made in her name to the Onondaga Historical Association, 321 Montgomery Street, Syracuse, NY 13202 or to the May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church, 3800 E. Genesee St, Syracuse, NY 13214.
A celebration of Mary Ellen’s life will be held on Saturday, April 21st at 12pm at The Nottingham, 1301 Nottingham Road, Jamesville, NY 13078.
