Obituary of James Brower, PhD

James Clinton Brower, PhD, 83, of Jamesville, passed away Monday, April 9, 2018 at his home.

Born June 27, 1934, in New Rochelle, he was the son of Irving and Mavis Deans Brower.  While growing up, he lived in many areas of the south, including Georgia and Florida.  After his parents died in a car accident, James at age 20 dropped out of the University of Florida and enlisted in the Army, where he served in Korea at the end of the Korean War.  After serving in the Army, he went to American University where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Geology.  He received his PhD at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.  Immediately after graduation, he and his first wife, June moved to Syracuse where he taught for 33 years.  They had two sons together, Jeffrey and Richard, prior to June’s death in 1982.  In 1989, he married his second wife, Karen.  They have been married 29 years and were true soulmates.  In the Earth Science Department, he taught Paleontology and Statistics.  He published numerous papers over his career on Crinoids statistics and bird flight.   

He is survived by his loving wife, Karen; two sons, Jeffrey (Amy) Brower of McLean, VA and Richard Brower of North Syracuse; one step daughter, Erin (Marty) Mauro; two step sons, Regan (Laura) Mahoney and Sean (Krystina) Mahoney; and six granddaughters, Katie, Maddie, Anna and Olivia Brower and Keira and Neve Mahoney.

Per his wishes there will be no services.  Arrangements are with Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel.
