Obituary of Dr. Michael Neal
Dr. Michael W. Neal, 71, of Pompey, passed away Monday, May 7, 2018 at Crouse Hospital, with his loving family by his side.
He was born July 11, 1946, in Rochester, the son of the late Walter P. and M. Virginia Seaman Neal. He received his BA degree in biology from Hartwick College and his PhD in biochemistry from Syracuse University. For 35 years he worked at Syracuse Research Corporation and had directed projects in toxicology and human risk assessment for the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. He retired in 2003 as the Director of Chemical Hazard Assessment Division (CHAD) and later the Environmental Science Center (ESC). He was also the co-author of “Dictionary of Chemical Names & Synonyms”.
Dr. Neal was a member of the NRA, the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Michael enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, woodworking and collecting antique oak furniture.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carol Middleton Neal; a sister, V Donna (Robert Jr.) Launt of Bedford, PA; two brothers-in-law, Arthur (Dawn) Middleton of Cicero and David (Jeanne) Middleton of Casselberry, FL; a sister-in-law, Julie (Jeffrey) Bigness of Clay; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Friday from 2-4 pm at Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Blvd East, DeWitt followed by his funeral at 4 pm, with Father John Kurgan officiating.
