Obituary of Phyllis Perkins
Phyllis Woolsey Perkins, 94
(February 12, 1924–July 13, 2018)
Phyllis Woolsey Perkins lived her life for others. As a faithful daughter, nurse, wife, mom, grandma, church leader, community leader, and volunteer, she served with extraordinary compassion, integrity, and strength.
Born in Canastota, NY, Phyllis was the daughter of Royal Dwight and Angeline Golly Woolsey and younger sister of Kennaird E. Woolsey, Ida M. Woolsey, Madeline A. Begore, and Leonore M. Stewart. After completing Cazenovia Junior College, she graduated from Syracuse Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse. Phyllis went on to earn her B.S. and M.S. in Nursing Education at Syracuse University.
Phyllis and Donald W. Perkins met and married at First Presbyterian Church of Syracuse, and they shared 63 years of marriage until his death in 2015. They devoted their lives to one another, their family, and God. Together Phyllis and Don raised five children: Diane Castro (Juan Antonio), Karen Giblin (Terrence), Janice Devine (Timothy), Douglas Jacobs-Perkins (Andrée), and Linda Bennington Harrington. They also delighted in their 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Laura Gómez Malagón of Mexico has been like a daughter since she was an exchange student in their home in 1969.
In addition to building a strong family, Phyllis served her church and community in countless ways. She and Donald were charter members of Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church, where they remained actively involved. Phyllis also volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Hospice, Winds of Agape, the J-D Board of Education, DAR, and Literacy Volunteers, among others. She received numerous honors, including the 2009 Post Standard Achievement Award for her volunteer work. In 2010 she received an honorary doctorate from Cazenovia College.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate the witness to the resurrection for Phyllis at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church (5299 Jamesville Rd., DeWitt, NY 13214) on Saturday, August 4 at 1:00 p.m. The family requests no flowers, but donations in her honor may be made to Literacy CNY (100 New St., Syracuse, NY 13202), Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church, or Hospice CNY (990 7th North St., Liverpool, NY 13088).
