Obituary of Leonard R. Pollman, Sr.
Leonard R. Pollman, Sr., “Len”, 90, of Syracuse, died peacefully in his sleep on November 23, 2018. Born and raised in Missouri, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1950. Len served during the Korean War with occupation forces in Japan. Following discharge from the Air Force he went to college on the GI Bill. After graduation from the University of Missouri in 1957, he moved to Syracuse, NY to work for GE Company’s Heavy Military Department Radar Systems. He transferred to Florida to work on the Apollo Project in the 60’s and then the Par Radar Project at Bell Labs in New Jersey in the early 70’s. He returned to Syracuse in 1975 to the GE Software Engineering Organization where he specialized in testing software for radar and sonar systems. He was a member of the GE Elfun Society. He retired from GE in 1988 after 32 years of service. He enjoyed having lunch with his fellow retirees.
Len was a member of VFW 3146 in Mattydale and American Legion 1276 in Eastwood. He was an avid golfer and participated in several Syracuse District senior events. He was a past member of Nottingham Knolls, Drumlins Country Club and Links of Erie Village.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Mary Jane; daughter, Irene Comstock (Thom), of Syracuse; son, Rick Pollman (Maria) of Cleveland, OH; daughter, Judy Pollman of Fayetteville; and grandchildren, Lauren and John. Len was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, beloved by his family for his care, love and sense of humor.
Calling hours will be Monday from 4 – 6:30 pm at Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Blvd East, DeWitt. US Air Force Honors will be accorded at the conclusion of visitation. Interment will be in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
