Obituary of Edward S. Balian

Edward S. Balian, 94, of Easterly Terrace, DeWitt, NY, passed away peacefully at his home on August 19, 2019.

Welcome to a life well-lived. He was born in 1924 in Rochester, NY, to Aram and Arshalouys (Aurora) Balian. His parents had escaped the genocide against Armenians in Turkey and found refuge in America. When he was 2, his family moved to Auburn, NY.

Edward (Ed) graduated from Auburn East High in 1942. Later that year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the Armored Infantry and Combat Engineers during WW II in Italy.

He attended Cornell University on the GI Bill and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Later, he attained a New York State Professional Engineering License. Ed was hired by General Electric in Syracuse. He worked there for 35 years, first as an engineering manager and then as a program manager, where he helped develop RADAR, SONAR, and infrared programs. While with GE, Ed was a member of technical committees for NATO that were focused on European air defense.

Ed was an accomplished flute player and was well-respected for his playing in community and professional groups in Syracuse. He had an eager curiosity and a perceptive mind, which fueled his interests in travel, history, and science. Ed was a member of the DeWitt Community Church, where he was active in various roles and committees. Later, he attended St. Paul Armenian Church. He was an avid stamp and coin collector.

He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Marie Pearson and Lillian Lundquist; his younger brother, Richard; his wife and love of his life, Marie-Louise Balian; his son, Paul Balian; and his son-in-law, Peter Rinella. Ed is survived by his loving, quirky, and kind daughter, Barbara Anne Rinella; his grandchildren, Michael (Beth) and David (Laura) Van Gelder; his step grandchildren Brian (Kathryn) Rinella and Erin (Kyle) Holland; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Friday, August 23rd at 11 a.m. at DeWitt Community Church, 3600 Erie Blvd East, DeWitt.  Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt.
