James Mahshie

Obituary of James J. Mahshie

James Joseph Mahshie, 94, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, August 30, 2019 after a brief illness. Jim, as he was known to friends and family, was born in Syracuse NY on November 27, 1924. He was the son of Samuel and Olga Mahshie and was married to Addie (Jones) Mahshie (deceased). He is survived by his brother, Henry Mahshie; sisters, Helen Abdo, Edna Zeppetello, and Hazel Conan; three children, Dr. James Mahshie of Washington, DC, Cindy (David) Esber of New Franklin, Ohio and Deacon Robert (Maggie) Mahshie of Syracuse; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a devoted grandfather to his grandchildren, Zachary (Leslie) and Jamie Mahshie, Samira, Aliah, and Kailah Mahshie, and Shahna(Brandon), Dr. Allahna, David and Zachary Esber; and his great grandchildren, Ryan and Eleanor Mahshie.

Following a stint in the Marines, Jim worked in the family grocery business where he was the manager.  He subsequently explored a number of other business opportunities, including real estate sales, restauranteur, and horse trainer.  He returned to the grocery business with the purchase of Nedrow Market, where he and his wife Addie worked until their retirement. Even in retirement he continued working in the food industry, serving as the buyer for his son, Robert, and daughter-in-law, Maggie’s restaurant.   He believed in hands on buying and was well known at the market for his demand of the best ingredients.

Jim loved music, Arabic food, boating, being outdoors and an “occasional endless cup of coffee”.    However, most of all he and his devoted wife Addie, were committed to their children and grandchildren. They realized the importance of an education, and sacrificed to make that happen.   Jim demonstrated a willingness to listen and support everyone’s dreams as well as contribute to any task.  He displayed a wisdom to enjoy every moment he could and even near the end would never complain.  He trusted every acquaintance and enjoyed hearing of a new concept or venture with enthusiasm.

He enjoyed life, family, and his Christian faith.  He developed a deep fondness for his daughter in-law, Maggie, who was his caregiver for the past few years and was dear to his heart. Despite health issues, he made certain that he attended his granddaughter, Shahna’s marriage in 2018 in California, and his granddaughter, Jamie’s and grandson, Zach’s college graduation celebrations in Washington DC.
