Dr. Lorne Runge

Obituary of Dr. Lorne A. Runge

Dr. Lorne Arthur Runge died peacefully at home on Monday, September 23, 2019, after bravely fighting pancreatic cancer for nearly two years.

Dr. Runge was born August 3, 1940 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was the son of Gustav Runge and Eileen Pepper Runge.  Gus’ work as a mining engineer took the family all over Canada, and Lorne and his brother, Edward grew up in Red Lake, MacKenzie Island, Noranda, the Eastern Townships and Hudson, Quebec, and Kitchener, Ontario. His love of sports and the outdoors, nurtured in the Canadian wilderness, dates from that time.

Lorne attended McGill University and its medical school and was graduated in 1965 with his classmate, Dr. Ellen FitzPatrick Runge, his wife of 54 years.  Together, they moved to Chicago, where they were interns at Cook County Hospital. Lorne then became a resident in medicine at the Brigham Hospital in Boston followed by a fellowship in rheumatology at the Mass General Hospital, also in Boston.  A research year followed at the National Research Council at Harrow on the Hill, London, England.  He joined the Faculty of the University of Ottawa in 1970 and came to Syracuse in 1975 to join the faculty as rheumatologist at Upstate.

With Dr. Patrick Riccardi, he founded the Arthritis Health Associates, and loved their work at the AHA.  Dr. Runge was board certified in Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, and Sports Medicine.

Dr. Runge loved sports and the outdoors, cross-skiing, bicycling and running. He ran countless marathons and earned his Coureur des Bois and permanent number at the great (and grueling) Canadian Ski Marathon.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Runge; brother; Edward Runge of Nashville TN; and four children, Christopher (Susan) Runge of Redding CT, Timothy (Shelagh) Runge of Rochester, NY, Margaret Runge of San Francisco, CA and Anne Runge (Delian Naydenov) of Stamford, CT; and six grandchildren, Paul, Willa and Karl Runge of Rochester, John Woodward Runge of Redding CT and Theo and Nikolai Naydenov of Stamford CT; as well as five nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 12 noon at DeWitt Community Church, 3600 Erie Blvd East, DeWitt.  A calling hour will precede the service from 11 am – 12 noon, at the church.  Private interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Medway, MA.
