A wonderful human being, Jim’s achievements and contributions to the Greater Syracuse community will impact not only this generations but generations to come. He was a mentor to me from my earliest days in Syracuse as a young health care professional to the end of my career. We were in touch recently and shared memories. There is no one I admired more. We have lost a wonderful person. I first met Jim about 1993 after I arrived in Syracuse as president of SUNY Upstate Medical University. He asked me to serve on a search committee for the county health commissioner. His calm, even demeanor coupled with a clear understanding of what he wanted to accomplish characterized all my interactions with him over the years. I both liked him and admired him very much.

I met Jim Abbot shortly after moving to Syracuse for Internship in 1974. In his role as CEO of St. Joseph’s Hospital he intervened to make the hospital change its position on an issue of employment. I often observed him in action as Chairman of the Board of Health Services Corporation where I was medical director. He was always fair and thoughtful, calm and reasoned. I love the way he would run meetings: “All in favor, say, aye.” And then “All opposed, like sign.” He was a gentleman in the best sense of the word. Our medical community will miss his leadership. It seems like only a few months ago that I saw both Jim and his wife at The Eggplant. My condolences to the family.

Sending most respectful sentiments during these difficult days. Did so appreciate knowing Jim and enjoyed various trips to Maryland's Eastern Shore for some fine days in the field blinds. The Abbott Family was blessed so richly as was St. Joseph's.
Sincerely,
Anton F. "Tony" Kreuzer

I did not know Mr. Abbott, but his list of accomplishments and enumerated assignments of service are astounding. What a guiding force he must have been for institutional health care in Central New York through the second half of the Twentieth Century. What a giant, and what a long and wonderfully useful life. I send my condolences to the family, and my thanks to God that such a man was provided to bless the people of Central New York. Some save lives by going to medical school, others save lives by building hospitals and keeping the lights turned on. From today, to this leader of yesterday -- thank you, and God bless.

I've known Jim for most of my professional career. He deserves much credit for establishing St. Joe’s as a major hospital in CNY, both in reputation and in patient numbers. Respected by his peers at all hospitals, Jim understood the advantages of hospital cooperation, health care planning, and community service. His was honored several years ago by Upstate University Hospital for his service there and within the community. A true gentleman. I extend my sincere condolences to the Abbott family.
