Obituary of Dorothy M. Downing

Dorothy M. “Dot” Downing, 91, of Fayetteville, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2020 at the Iroquois Nursing Home, with her family by her side, after a brief stay for rehabilitation. She was born July 12, 1928 in Petersburg, VA, the only child of George Henry and Beatrice Catherine Umstead Miner. She was a graduate of Fayetteville-Manlius High School and received her BA degree from Syracuse University Crouse School of Music. She taught piano while raising her family and was the owner of G. H. Miner Co., Inc., an industrial insulation sales company, until her retirement. She was a member of the Onondaga Golf & Country Club, Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church and its Women’s Evening Club, Syracuse District Golf Association, New York State Golf Association, US Golf Association and Kappa Kappa Gamma. Along with her husband, they ran local qualifiers for the US Golf Association tournaments. Dot was an avid golfer and gardener. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Richard B. Downing on March 6, 2007. She is survived by three children, Alice (Mark) Irwin of Manlius, Richard (Margaret) Downing of Cortland and P. Michael Downing of Syracuse; a grandson, Benjamin Bronson; a granddaughter, Nadine Downing; her dear friend, Floyd “Skip” Brennan; and her devoted friend, Camille Greaney. Due to current circumstances, a celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Private interment will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens, DeWitt. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider the Food Bank of Central New York, in her memory. Arrangements are with Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel.
