Garratt Savage

Obituary of Garratt Marshall Savage

Garratt Marshall Savage passed away on June 1, 2020 in Syracuse, NY. Garry was born December 3, 1942 in Syracuse and was a lifelong resident of the Town of DeWitt. He graduated from Jamesville-DeWitt High School in 1960 and attended Penn State University. For several years he worked for the family business, Francis Hendricks Co. As a young man, he owned Garry’s Manlius Shell Station before becoming owner-operator of Garry Savage Trucking. After selling the trucking business, he was hired by the Susquehanna Railroad to run trains for OnTrack, a suburban rail line operating in Syracuse. One of his favorite trips was taking SU fans from Armory Square to the Dome for football and basketball games. For over 50 years Garry was a member of the DeWitt Fire Department and held positions of President and Secretary during his tenure. He helped procure, restore and operate the department’s antique fire engine which he drove in local parades. He was in the process of writing the engine’s history. A lifelong dream came true for Garry when he began volunteering for the historic Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Garry began his work there as a laborer, cutting brush & painting cars. In a short-time he moved up to trainman then conductor and, finally engineer and served eight years as a board member. When asked which was his favorite locomotive he said “whichever one I'm running at the time”. Garry traveled the world with his amazing and adventurous wife Bobbie, bringing stories and smiles to everyone he met. On these trips he would seek out the local train station where he would befriend an engineer. Not only did he have exciting rides in the cab of the Copper Canyon railroad in Mexico, he rode cabs in Peru, Argentina, Spain and Egypt. When on small boat cruises he spent more time in the engine room learning about the workings of the boat than he did above deck. He loved telling stories, listening to classic country music and learning to play piano. Some of his best times were spent at the family camp in the Adirondacks. As a child he stayed much of the summer there with his grandmother and for years hosted the DeWitt Volunteer Firemen's infamous autumn get-togethers. “Gabby” as he was known to family, had a special love for his children and grandchildren and was enormously proud of their accomplishments. He was a patient teacher, a kind and generous man whose memory will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. Garry was predeceased by his father, Marshall Savage; his mother, Shirley Savage; and his granddaughter, Lauren. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Roberta; children, Lisa (Steven ) Webster, James Savage, Teresa (Matthew Smith) Celemin, Charles Celemin, and Cindy (Nathan) Maypole; his brother, James (Jacqueline) Savage; sisters, Ellen (Karl) Hildenbrand and June (William) McMorrow; seven beloved grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
