Obituary of Marcia Coons Hill

Marcia Coons Hill, 91, died Friday June 5, 2020 at the Jewish Home of Rochester. Born in Syracuse, a daughter of H. Edwin Coons and Elsie Green Coons, she was a graduate of Nottingham HS (Salutatorian 1946) and Syracuse University (BA 1950; MA 1984; Eta Pi Upsilon, Delta Gamma). With her husband she was the recipient of SU’s Eggers Award. Mrs. Hill was a minister’s wife serving the United Methodist churches in Brewerton, Hamilton, Oneida, Syracuse First, the Syracuse District, and Camillus. She was employed in the math and science department at Nottingham; as an assistant to Dr. Joseph Sturr at Syracuse University; taught Latin at Jamesville-Dewitt High School and was an active member of C.A.E.S. She was pre-deceased by her husband, the Reverend Irving G. Hill, her sister-in- law and brother- in- law, Jean and Paul Litchison, her brother-in-law, David Laventhol, niece, Sarah Laventhol and nephew, Charles Litchison. She is survived by her sisters, Jane Coons and Esther Laventhol; four children, Robert Allan (Janette) Hill, Boston MA, Catherine Elizabeth (Robert) Hill Suttmeier, Oneida, NY, Cynthia Anne (Todd) Hill-Goddard, Rush, NY, and John Irving (Denise) Hill, Waynesboro, VA; nine grandchildren, Emily (Stephen) Cady, Benjamin(Anne) Hill, Christopher (Yukiyo) Hill, Jane and Mary Suttmeier, Nicholas and Christian Goddard, Emma and Sydney Hill; great-grandchildren, Ellie, Charlie and Hannah Cady; Sally, Jane and Caroline Hill; and Kyrie Hill; several nieces and nephews and her Otsego County cousins; all of whom she loved very much. Marcia enjoyed her wide circle of friends, her PEO sisters, swimming at Bradley Brook, traveling with her husband, watching Syracuse Basketball and practicing her faith. She believed in doing things right; maintaining unfailing courtesy and kindness through five years of progressive dementia. She had a smile for everyone even when life got very tough. She was a lifelong learner and a lover of art and music. She passed those values down to her children, grandchildren and to her students. The family wishes to thank the staff of the 4th floor of the Rochester Presbyterian Home and the Jewish Home of Rochester for their care. Burial Service 11:00 A.M.
