Obituary of Thomas J. Csermely

Thomas J. Csermely died December, 15 at age 82. He was born in Szombathely, Hungry, where he graduated from the Premonstratensian St. Norbert Gymnasium (1949). He received a diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Budapest, Hungry (1953), worked as an instructor in the Institute for Theoretical Physics, Technical University of Budapest (1953-1956), and was appointed as consultant in the Nuclear Engineering Design Bureau for Power Stations, Budapest (1956). Tom had to flee his homeland after fighting in the failed 1956 revolution against the communist regime in Hungry. With the help of the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S. he was able to immigrate to the United States in 1957. He came to Syracuse and worked as a research engineer in the Research Department of Carrier Corporation (1957-1967), and as a research associate in the Physic Department of Syracuse University (1967-1968). In 1968 Tom received his Ph.D. degree in Physics from Syracuse University. He was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology in the SUNY Upstate Medical Center College of Medicine (1968-1976), and in the Physics Department of LeMoyne College (1976-1977). In 1977, Tom joined the faculty of the L.C. Smith College of Engineering at Syracuse University where he worked as an Associate Professor first in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and later in the Department of Bioengineering and Neurosciences. After his official retirement (1995) he continued to each for a while in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Tom was a very caring and devoted father to his only son, Erik, who predeceased him in 2009. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Tiiu, with whom he made his home in Dewitt. Tom loved music, especially singing, sailing and nature in all of its beauty. He was an outspoken and tireless advocate for the mentally and physically handicapped children and adults, and served for many years on the Board of Directors as well as several committees of the Arc of Onondaga. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 21 at 12:00 at All Saints Church. 1340 Lancaster Avenue.
