Obituary of Thomas E. McCune

Thomas E. “Tom” McCune, 69, of Fayetteville, passed away Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Crouse Hospital, with his family by his side. Born July 31, 1951 at Loges Air Force Base in Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Ruby Poffinberger McCune and grew up in Marshall, MO. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and was the recipient of the Amelia Earhart Award Certificate in 1968. From 1969-1971, Tom served with the US Coastguard. In 1973, he received his Bachelor’s degree from Missouri Valley College and received his Master’s degree from Central Missouri State University in 1974. For many years, Mr. McCune was a Psychologist for New York State in Utica. After retiring he worked as a Forum Administrator for Symantec for PGP. A former resident of Holland Patent, he served as a member, Vice President and President of the Holland Patent Central School Board from 1986-1996 and served on the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES Cooperative Board of Education from 1998-2001. Since 2012, Tom volunteered for Hospice & Palliative Care. Tom was very interested in the study of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia for which he formed his own website, http://www.mccune.cc/CLL.htm, Star Trek, computer security and cryptography and of course his family. He studied American Eagle Cane Style martial arts and was promoted to the rank of 1st Degree Black Belt in 2017. Tom is survived by his wife, Cheryl Ringham McCune; children, Jennifer and Mark Sinsabaugh, Thomas “John” McCune and Jodie Polito and Jessica and Andrew Hotaling; stepchildren, Jane and Brendan McLaughlin, Pete Livshin and Claudia Solis, Joseph Livshin and Megan Adams, Emily Livshin and Zachary Hogan and Rachael Messer and Mark Puckett; grandchildren, Jackson McLaughlin, Calla Hotaling, Peyton Stalter, Ethan Livshin, Andrew Thomas “AJ” Hotaling and Mason Livshin; sisters, Barbara and George James and Fran and Jeff Tromp; brother, Mike and Carol Callaway; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert McCune. A celebration of life ceremony will be held at a date and time to be announced. As per his wishes, peanut butter cups and Southern Comfort will be provided, as he felt that those would be a nice touch. Although not necessary, if anyone wishes to make a donation in his honor, they may make them to Hospice of CNY. The family wishes to thank, Changing Seasons, Hospice of CNY, the nursing staff of 4 South at Crouse Hospital, Hematology & Oncology at Brittonfield and Dr. Tsai and his staff for all their exemplary care.
