Obituary of Eric A. Gustafson

Eric A. Gustafson, 72, of Syracuse, died Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at Iroquois Nursing Home. Born in Kansas City, MO, he has lived in Syracuse since 1979. Eric was principal violist of Symphoria and the Syracuse Symphony, as well as other orchestras in the Northeast. He was a professor at Hamilton College and Syracuse University, and was violist and founding member of the DeVere Quartet. Eric graduated from Juilliard and did graduate work at SUNY Binghamton in the young artists program. In addition to performing, Eric wrote many compositions. Some of these were performed by the Society for New Music, and he produced a cd, Celestial Railroad, under the pseudonym of Artemis Trine. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anita; and his beloved son, Leif of Homer Alaska. He is also survived by his brother, Greg of Madeira, CA; his sister, Vicki Swanson of Kansas City, MO; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service is planned for the spring.
