Obituary of Katherine Billingham

Katherine “Kay” Vaughan Cutchins Billingham, born January 4, 1929 in Franklin, Virginia, died January 30, 2021 in Syracuse, New York. A granddaughter of a US Army general, she was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Barons of Runnemede, and the First Families of Virginia. Kay graduated with a BA in English Literature from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1950, taught Latin and English at Chuckatuck Central High School in Virginia, and earned an MS in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. She used to say that she received her MS and her MRS from the University of PA where she met a dental student named Bill, who was the love of her life. Kay and Bill then moved to Syracuse, where they were blessed with 65 years together. A born leader, she served as the 2nd Vice Regent of the General Asa Danforth Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Advisor to the Syracuse University Collegiate Chapter of Kappa Delta Sorority, President of the Syracuse City Panhellenic Association, and Board Member and Treasurer of the Corinthian Club. In 2018, the George and Rebecca Barnes Foundation honored Kay with an award for community service and leadership. A member of First Presbyterian Church United for 55 years, Kay sang in the church choir, participated as an Elder, a member of the Finance Committee, and was active in the Church’s Women’s Association, serving as President from 1968-1970. Even while busy raising three children and helping to manage her husband’s dental practice, she enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader for six years and a Cub Scout den mother for two. Kay was warm and loving, a real southern lady, and an excellent correspondent and note writer. She enjoyed sailing, dancing, gardening, history, genealogy, and traveling. Throughout her life she was an avid learner, enjoying historical novels and always eager to learn about a place through a guided tour or talking to an expert. If she met you once, you were a friend. Her friends were for life and she will be sorely missed. Kay was predeceased by her parents, Sarah Vaughan Cutchins and Clifford Armstrong Cutchins, Jr.; an older brother, Clifford Armstrong Cutchins, III; and an older sister, Sarah Keith DeMoss. She is survived by her husband, William A. Billingham; three children, Kitty (Stanley) deVoogd of Louisville, KY, William C. (Joleen) Billingham of Wheaton, IL, and Penny Weinheimer of Cheltenham, England; and ten grandchildren, Andrew (Kelley) Tucker of San Antonio, TX, Nicolas deVoogd of Dallas, TX, Tatiana (Dustin) Daugherty of Dayton, OH, Kristen deVoogd of Louisville, KY, Wm. Joshua Billingham of New York, NY, Adam Billingham of Los Angeles, CA, Eliza Billingham of Hanoi, Vietnam, Kurt Weinheimer of Arlington, VA and Scott Weinheimer and Erica Weinheimer, both of Richmond, ME. Kay requested that memorial gifts be sent to the George and Rebecca Barnes Foundation in care of the Corinthian Club, 930 James Street, Syracuse, NY 13203.
