Margaret Ostapaw

Obituary of Margaret M. Ostapaw

Margaret M. Ostapaw, 100, passed away April 28, 2021. She was born on December 12, 1920 in New York City, where she returned to visit every chance she got. She graduated from Galway High School in 1937, received a teaching degree from SUNY Oneonta and a Master’s degree from Syracuse University. She taught almost all the elementary grades, first through sixth, as well as art, at the Scotia-Glenville School District and lived in Scotia, New York most of her adult life. She is survived by a sister-in-law Lorraine Ostapow; nieces, Marcia, Anita, Christine and Kathleen; nephew, John; and several generations of grand-nieces and nephews. She was born the year women were finally given the right to vote, and embodied the spirit of that era by being fiercely independent. Full of curiosity, Margaret traveled throughout the United States and the world, including the Adirondacks, Alaska, Australia, France, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Nova Scotia, Spain, and Yellowstone. With camera in hand, she captured many remarkable images along the way. She shared her curiosity and love for adventure, and in 1964 she packed up her nieces, took them on the train with her, and brought them to see to see the World’s Fair! Her curiosity also made her a voracious reader. Her house was not filled with many material objects, but books were everywhere. Margaret was an avid watercolor artist and had an intense interest in learning new techniques. She loved landscapes and created many beautiful paintings that decorated her and her family’s homes. She was feisty until the end and continued to delight her caregivers and family with her wit. The family would like to thank the Francis House for all their wonderful care and compassion shown to Margaret. A Memorial Mass and celebration of her life will take place Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 10 AM at St. Joseph Church, 231 Second Street, Scotia, NY 12303. In memory of Margaret, contributions can be made to the Francis House. Arrangements are with Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel.
