Obituary of Karen E. Scholl
Karen Elizabeth Scholl, 67, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2021 at Upstate University Hospital after a period of declining health in an otherwise full life. Born and raised in North Syracuse, New York to Peter D. Scholl and Alice Smith Scholl, Karen was nurtured in a family of public educators and developed a lifelong commitment to meeting the diverse needs of children. After receiving degrees from Cornell University and Lesley University, Karen began her career as a special education teacher in the North Syracuse Central School District. From there, she was drawn to serve individuals with visual impairments at the NYS Commission for the Blind, followed by a long tenure as a Regional Associate with the NYS Education Department. In all of her professional roles, Karen lived out her belief in developing the unique capacities and potential of every person. Karen was devoted to her family and particularly her two children, Elizabeth and Nathan, and their beloved labradoodle, Wilson. After retirement, Karen was able to travel the world with dear friends, create beautiful spaces, both life-sized and miniature, and cultivate her palate for wine and food. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Scholl-Hess of Latham, NY; son, Nathan Scholl-Hess and granddaughter, Avery of Guilderland, NY; sisters, Natalie of Trumansburg, NY and Andrea (Earl) of New Bern, NC; nephew, Peter; and niece, Sara. A celebration of her life will be planned at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Karen’s life may be sent to Francis House 108 Michaels Ave, Syracuse, NY 13208. The Scholl family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who knew Karen for their love and support. Arrangements are with Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel.
