Obituary of Barbara Pauline Miller

Barbara Pauline Rice Miller, beloved wife, mother, sister in law and grandmother, passed away on Friday, November 12, 2021. She was 86. Barbara is survived by her son Erich Miller and daughter in law Teri Miller, daughter Gretchen Miller Basso and son in law Arik Basso, son Carl Miller and daughter in law Karen Goodwin, three granddaughters, Amanda Miller, Andrea Miller, and Mia Basso, sister in law Joyce Fish and brother in law William Fish, and cousin Beverly Temple. Barbara recently lost her beloved husband of 64 years, Roger Allen Miller, on October 4, 2021. She was also predeceased by her parents, Paul Rex Rice and Helen Edith Williams Rice. Barbara was born on June 16, 1935, in Chillicothe, Ohio. She and Roger were married on August 31, 1957. They lived in Cleveland OH, and, in 1964, moved to Corning, NY, where they raised their family. When they retired, they moved to Penn Yan, NY, and spent winters in Green Valley, AZ. Barbara had a friendly nature and a warm, welcoming smile. She had a special gift of being positive and optimistic. Barbara loved her friends and family, and was very much loved in return. She treasured the time she spent with her many friends and connecting with a new friend always brought her joy. Her children adored her. She loved being a mother and showed her love in many ways including cooking delicious meals and always being there to share their joys and comfort their sorrows. Barbara's natural role in life was that of a teacher. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education at Ohio University and became an elementary school teacher. An avid and accomplished quilter, Barbara enjoyed sharing her talent and love of the craft by teaching quilting at 171 Cedar in Corning, NY, and, most recently, to her granddaughter. Her beautiful quilts have been displayed in numerous shows and she was often chosen to speak on quilting techniques. Additionally, Barbara was a member of the Embroiderers’ Guild and Hospital Chapter in Corning, NY, and served in several roles at the Corning Museum of Glass. Barbara was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Branchport, NY. She loved her church family, and was eager to participate in church activities. Barbara served as a member of the Vestry and the Altar Guild, taught Sunday School and served as Co-Chair of the Fourth of July Bake Sale. She designed and created a beautiful quilted banner for the church, which is on display in the sanctuary. An image of the banner was chosen to be put on a special edition bottle of wine produced and bottled by St. Luke’s Wine Company (Hunt Country Vineyards) that was used for communion. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Barbara will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at 11:00 am at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 187 West Lake Road, Route 54A, Branchport, NY, 14418. The family welcomes donations to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers. Arrangements are with Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel.
