Obituary of Alice T. Jastrem

Alice T. Jastrem, 92 of Syracuse, entered into eternal life on Sunday, December 19, 2021 with her daughter Karen by her side. Alice was the daughter of Felix and Anna Lewicki. A “New Year’s Baby”, she was born in Syracuse on January 1, 1929. Alice grew up in the Vann Street neighborhood, where, for many years she was a regular communicant of Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church. She graduated from Crouse Irving School of Nursing in 1950 and worked for 40 years at Syracuse University Health Center until she retired. In 1955, she and her husband Anthony welcomed their only daughter, Karen, into the world, and the family lived at the house Anthony had built at 114 Manor Drive. Alice was very talented at sewing, having made hundreds of handmade decorations, costumes, ornaments, and other items which will always remind her family of her. They spent many happy hours with Karen on family trips, and then with their grandchildren on visits to Green Lakes and the zoo. She enjoyed attending school plays, concerts, and functions for her grandchildren. Alice is survived by her daughter, Karen (Ken) Kirkman; and three grandchildren, Rev. Kenneth Kirkman, Matthew and Kathleen; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Anthony R. Jastrem; parents, Felix and Anna; sisters, Jean and Bernie; and brothers, John, Peter, Frank, Stanley, and Edward. Alice’s life revolved around her family, both immediate and extended, and attended many of the numerous family parties at Christmas, Easter, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July, where her Jell-O Ribbon Salad was a perennial favorite. Her family extended even further to neighbors and friends, especially her neighbor Linda; and her caretakers, Tesla and Mindy; all of whom she dearly loved. She treasured especially the time she was able to spend with Tesla’s daughter Maddie, who lit up the whole house whenever she visited. A calling hour will be held at Holy Cross Church, 4112 E. Genesee Street, DeWitt at 10 AM on Monday, December 27, 2021. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM by her grandson, Rev. Kenneth R. Kirkman.
